1. General information
The subject of Scientific English I for Occupational Therapy is part of the teaching framework of English for Specific Purposes, whose contents are focused on the occupational therapist's profession. Both in theory and in practical classes, the four skills are worked on so that the student can communicate in written and oral form. The subject is taught in English and is based on the equivalent level of requirement B1
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030 (http.//www.un.org/sutanabledevelopment/es/), in such a way that the acquisition of the learning results of the subject provides training and competence to contribute to some extent to their achievement. Goal 3: Health and Wellness; Goal 4: Quality Education.
2. Learning results
1.To become familiar with the characteristics of scientific English.
2. To use English in the area of occupational therapy through the discursive, rhetorical and linguistic functions of the scientific register at an initial-basic level
3. To acquire the general reading comprehension skills to understand and interpret scientific texts at a basic level
4.To write paragraphs, which respond to different needs and are used in the professional communication of the discipline.
5. To develop oral comprehension by working on OT-related topics at a beginner-basic level.
6.To Know the basic vocabulary specific to Occupational Therapy in English and be able to develop their own glossary
7. To learn how to manage their learning and learn about the tools that can help them.
3. Syllabus
Theoretical Teaching
- Occupational Therapy: What is occupational therapy? Allied Health Professions.
- Hospitals: Introduction to a hospital/ Outpatients/ Inpatients. Symptoms and Signs: describing problems.
- What is Pain?: Pain Classification. Pain Assessment. Types of Pain. Managing Chronic Pain- What can an Occupational Therapist Do?
- Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Basic Activities of Daily Living / Instrumental Activities of Daily Living.
- Occupational Therapists: The patient with Learning Disabilities. Paediatric Occupational Therapist: Children with The Role of the Occupational Therapist in Schools.
- Anatomy and Physiology: Definitions: The Building Blocks of the Body. The Skeleton. Bone and Bone Accessory Structure.
- Building Language and Study Skills: Rhetorical Functions. Creating Good Study Habits. Writing descriptions. Organization and Function. Process. Location. Structure. Cause and consequence. Instructions.
- Occupational Therapy /International Framework. Creating Good Study Habits.
- Terminology: The Components of Medical Words. Reading and Understanding Medical Words.
- Listening Comprehension: Understanding OT videos and audios: taking notes, following instructions, summarizing, answering true-false questions/Filling in the gaps/finding synonyms, etc
Practical Teaching
- What is sociology: Could you explain the subject matter of sociology? What are sociological perspectives? Why is sociology important for an Occupational therapy student? Sociology vs other sciences. Social Groups, identity and Culture.
- The Andes Tragedy- A Sociological Perspective
4. Academic activities
Participative master class (48 hours): sessions with the teacher in which the subject will be explained.
Practical classes (12 hours): sessions to solve exercises and practical tasks set by the teacher.
Study and personal work (84 hours)
Assessment tests (6 hours)
5. Assessment system
CONTINUOUS EVALUATION SYSTEM
It is necessary for the student to take an active part in the exercises and activities that will be proposed in the classroom: intervention in debates, self-evaluation and correction activities, etc
Practices (30% of the total amount of the subject): Students will complete several short activities/micro-assignments at the end of each topic. They will be evaluated individually and the student's ability to critically reflect on some of the points studied will be assessed.
Final exam (60% of the total amount of the subject)
a) In this test they must demonstrate the knowledge acquired during the term: ability to understand and write in English, knowledge of specific vocabulary, definition and use of terminology specific to occupational therapy, writing of texts specific to their field, translation of texts specific to their area, translation of texts of their specialty, oral comprehension.
This test represents 60% of the final grade and must be passed in order to average with the rest of the grades.
b) There will also be a listening comprehension exercise (10% of the total computation of the subject) through a listening test on a text related to occupational therapy and the resolution of a written activity in which the student can demonstrate their level.
GLOBAL EVALUATION SYSTEM
Based exclusively on the final global test in which they will have to demonstrate the knowledge related to the whole content of the subject. The exam includes all the material covered during the term, the student will also take a listening comprehension test.
